$250+ per day
Substitute teachers earn very well in Sydney. You'll get at least $253.70 AUD if you have a 4 year degree and $228.77 AUD a day if you have a 3 year degree.
$39 per hour
If you work this out as an hourly rate, it equates to $39 AUD an hour at the higher level and $35 AUD an hour at the lower level. This is based on the fact that the public school day is six hours in Sydney, from 9 am until 3 pm. However, you will generally need to be at the school by 8:30 am and this brings the total number of hours worked to six and a half.
Work only 6-7 hours per day
A great thing about working as a casual teacher in Sydney is that if you work in the warmer months of the school year (November, December, February) you can collect your $250 AUD a day and still have four hours to play before the sun goes down. Then of course you've got your whole night ahead of you too. Nothing like having your cake and eating it too!
Dress code
Government school teachers can wear fairly informal attire in Sydney - probably because of the warm climate. Male teachers can wear shorts, polo shirts and even sandals, whereas female teachers can wear casual skirts or pants and singlet tops. In private schools the dress code is slightly more formal. Male teachers often wear a shirt and tie whereas female teachers usually kit up in business casual attire.
How to find work as a substitute teacher in Sydney
The best way to find casual teacher jobs in Sydney is to approach the schools directly. There are agencies, but schools often prefer to save the agency fees by ringing the substitute teachers directly.
Let the schools know of your availability by dropping off a brief resume (one page will do) and a cover letter. In person is the best way to do this so the principal can get a look at you and put a face to the name.
If you would like to work as a a teacher in Sydney, you will need to register with the NSW Education Department. The Education Department doesn't have the fastest rubber-stamp crew in the world, so it's best to apply for recognition of your overseas qualifications a few months before you arrive in Sydney.
