Here's a list of my ten most-frequented cafes in Sydney. They're not in any particular order.
Speedo's: Views Of Bondi Beach
This has to be one of the most atmospheric cafes in Sydney. There are views of Bondi Beach, friendly staff, and funky Bondi Beach artwork on the walls, and friendly staff. What more could you ask for? Address: 126 Ramsgate Ave North Bondi Beach.
Deus Ex Machina: Motorbike Lovers Unite!
Deus Ex Machina is a motorbike-themed cafe in trendy Camperdown. Set up by one of the founders of the famous Mambo Clothing, this place designs bikes, tshirts and will even serve you coffee and breakfast!
The atmosphere in Deus Ex Machina is invigorating. It's one of the few Sydney cafes with any spunk. Inside, you'll find a replica of the Indian motorcycle which set a land speed record and was also made famous by the movie "The World's Fastest Indian". You'll also see plenty of other bikes and cars, including Aussie Jack Brabham's F1 winning car.
However, if you are not into cars and bikes, Deus Ex Machina is still a great cafe. The food is great, the music is even better, and you could easily spend an afternoon here with a newspaper or good book. Address: Corner of Lyons and Parramatta Rds, Camperdown (15 minute walk from Central Station).
Gusto: The Red Hot Chilli Peppers' Favourite
This is the place to hang in Bondi Beach on a lazy Sunday (or any day if you're on holidays)! With outdoor seating available under a tree, you'll have a great view of passers-by on Hall St and Campbell Parade (Bondi Beach's major intersection). Gusto is a favourite of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers when they come to town. They love this place and you will too. Address: 16 Hall St Bondi Beach.
Jed's: Sit Under A Willow Tree
This place has a lovely weeping willow tree adjacent to its outdoor tables. You might end up sitting on an upturned milk crate if you're outside, but that's part of the fun. Address: 60 Warners Ave Bondi Beach.
Skinny Dip: It's Just There
It's where I always go to meet my friends. More often than not, I'll bump into a friend or two here. It's at the heart of Bondi Beach - Hall St, just a few blocks up from the beach. We once had so many people here, our tables stretched across the neighbouring fridge rental shopfront. The guy got a bit narky. Address: 97 Hall St Bondi Beach.
Teascapes: Board Games
This cafe is a lot of fun. It's a blast from the past. They have so many retro movie posters and 1980s board games, you feel like you've gone back in time. Around the corner from the Randwick Ritz (cheapest cinema tickets in Eastern Sydney ($5 Tuesdays), this is the perfect place to go before or after a flick. Highly reccommended. Address: 71 Perouse Rd The Spot Randwick (around the corner from the Randwick Ritz cinemas).
Pompeii's: Bondi Beach
Pompeii's make the best ice-cream in Bondi. When asked if you would like a chocolate log on top of your ice-cream, the correct answer is always "yes". I can't see any traveller who samples the wonders of the mighty Pompeii not coming back at least once or twice more. Yes, it's that good (but I'm biased - I like ice-cream). Cafe Hernandez: Late Night Action
This place has been drawing my pals and I back for years. Hernandez has plenty of old-fashioned charm, and it's still one of the few all-night cafes in Sydney. Hernandez is a great place if you want a hot chocolate or a coffee late at night. Address: 60 Kings Cross Rd Potts Point (adjacent to Kings Cross).
Orson and Blake's: Homewares Store and Cafe
An undiscovered treasure of Sydney, Orson and Blake's is a furniture and collectibles store with a bright cafe with a wonderful vibe. It's a great place to discuss all the homewares and collectibles you won't be able to stop yourself from purchasing! Highly recommended. Address: 483 Riley St Surry Hills.
