Insider Secrets For An Extraordinary Sydney Holiday!

Fun Things To Do In Sydney

Cozy Winter Bars In Sydney

Here are some of the best Sydney bars to drink at in winter. These bars have fireplaces, board games or movie nights for winter afternoons.

Madame Fling Flong

Madame Fling Flong is a cosy and classy bar. Think sofas, board games and movie nights. This is the kind of bar that you feel like you can relax in, rather than the type of bar where everybody is trying to look cool.

Address: 169 King St Newtown.

Victoria Rooms

Bring back the British Empire! The Victoria Rooms bar is inspired by the grand colonial bars of the 19th century. Fantastic lanterns and screens dot the room, and the colonial armchairs evoke the days of another era.

Address: Level 1/ 231a Victoria St Darlinghurst.

Outdoor Cinemas In Sydney

Outdoor cinemas in Sydney mean seeing a movie under the stars. You’re in for a totally different experience.

Imagine snuggling under a blanket on a picnic rug or taking in the lights of the Harbour Bridge in the background – with a cinema-sized screen in front of you showing the latest Hollywood movie.

10 Great Sydney Cafes

Here’s a list of my ten most-frequented cafes in Sydney. They’re not in any particular order.

Speedo’s: Views Of Bondi Beach

This has to be one of the most atmospheric cafes in Sydney. There are views of Bondi Beach, friendly staff, and funky Bondi Beach artwork on the walls, and friendly staff. What more could you ask for?

Address: 126 Ramsgate Ave North Bondi Beach.

When’s It On: 17th / 18th January 2009. (Second day is a repeat performance).

Danks Street Festival, Waterloo, Sydney

When’s It On: Sunday 26 October 2008 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM

The Danks Street Festival in Waterloo is a great way to pass the time on a Sunday afternoon.

According to the official website, “this fabulous event celebrates one of Sydney’s most interesting precincts with exhibitions from local galleries, an artists’ market, a food market selling fresh produce, live bands, a bar and DJs.”

If you’re visiting Sydney on holiday, it’s unlikely that you would ordinarily get to Danks Street, Waterloo.

So take advantage of this festival and get to see a side of Sydney that has nothing to do with beaches nor harbour.

Spiegeltent at the Sydney Opera House

When’s It On: 17 October – 15 November 2008

What Is A “Spiegeltent”?

The word “spiegeltent” is Dutch for “mirror tent”.

Wikipedia defines a spiegeltent as a “large travelling tent, constructed in wood and canvas and decorated with mirrors and stained glass, intended as an entertainment venue”.

The Sydney Spiegeltent is a combo “festival club, cabaret salon, dance hall and intimate concert venue” according to the website of the Sydney Opera House.

Blue Bar, Woolloomooloo, Sydney

The Blue Bar is one of those bars that can make you feel like you’re living the ‘Sex and the City’ lifestyle – right here in Sydney.

Set in a huge converted wharf, the dramatic high ceiling and intricately patterned carpet will get you in the mood for drinking – although we’re not talking beer (although they do serve that).

Cocktails, mojitos and caprioscas are the drinks to order when at the Blue Bar in Woolloomooloo. Don’t order the caprinha – it was very strong the night I had one and tasted very alcohol-y. Continue reading

Free Things To Do In Sydney 2008

Festival First Night: Sat 5th January

“Festival First Night” is the first night of the Sydney Festival. It showcases some of the best events of the Sydney Festival for free. This year, an electronic music / dance party was held in Martin Place and a rock and R’n'B concert was held in the nearby Domain (a large city park). Acts included Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, the Spanish Harlem group and DJ Ajax. Martin Place was a bit cramped but I imagine the Domain would have had more room.

Cafe Sydney

Stunning Views

Cafe Sydney has one of the most stunning views from a restaurant that I’ve ever seen. You will love the sight of the Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House framing the magnificent Sydney Harbour.

“No Bad Tables”

In fact, it’s one of the great touches about this restaurant is that there are no “bad” tables. Tables close to the windows are lower down, while tables further inside the restaurant are higher up to compensate.
